PTA 1213 - Therapeutic Interventions for Pain Management


3 Credit Hours

Course Description:
This  course prepares Physical Therapist Assistant students to safely and effectively implement therapeutic interventions under the supervision of licensed physical therapists. Students will develop comprehensive knowledge of pain experiences, pain management principles, physical agents, and evidence-informed practice while gaining hands-on experience in clinical decision-making and patient care. The course emphasizes the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills essential for competent PTA practice in diverse healthcare settings.

Through didactic instruction, laboratory experiences, and simulated patient scenarios, students will master the application of pain management interventions. The course provides in-depth coverage of tissue healing processes, and pain physiology. Students will develop competency in evidence-informed clinical reasoning, patient education, professional communication, and ethical practice while learning to safely operate therapeutic equipment. Emphasis is placed on understanding contraindications, recognizing adverse reactions, and making appropriate clinical decisions within the scope of PTA practice.

Acceptance to the PTA Program

BIO 1314 Human Anatomy and Physiology I with a grade of C or better

Corequisites:
BIO 1414  Human Anatomy and Physiology II

PTA 1013  Fundamentals of PT Practice

PTA 1023  Musculoskeletal System and Kinesiology
