Child Development - Early Childhood Education Option

The Associate in Arts in Child Development - Early Childhood Education prepares students to build a strong foundation in the principles and practices of early learning. Coursework emphasizes both general studies and early childhood-specific content to help future teachers develop as well-rounded, reflective professionals.

This degree is designed for students who plan to work with young children and their families and/or continue their education at a four-year institution in early childhood education or a related field. The program provides a solid academic and practical foundation for entering the early childhood profession, engaging in advanced study, and supporting the development and learning of young children and their families.

It is recommended that students in this program complete COM 2213 - Intro to Public Speaking, CD 2113 - Intro to Child Development (C), and SOC 1113 - Intro to Sociology as the 9 credit hours of general ed electives.  
It is recommended that students select from the following list to fulfill the general education humanities requirements:  PHIL 1123 Critical Thinking, PHIL 1013 Introduction to Philosophy, HUM 2213 Humanities Class/Med, HUM 2223 Humanities Modern, or HUM 2163 Leadership Development

English Composition (6 credit hours)


U.S. History and U.S. Government (6 credit hours)


Science (6-7 credit hours) - One science course must have a lab


Gen ed Biological Science (3 - 4 credit hours)

Gen ed Physical Science (3 - 4 credit hours)

Humanities (6 credit hours)


(selected from an approved list of general education humanities courses)

Mathematics (3 credit hours)


(Math 1483, 1503, 1533, 2013, PSY 2123 or any MATH prefix having MATH 1483 or 1533 as a prerequisite)

General Education Electives (9 credit hours)


(3 hours must be a social science elective:  PSY, SOC, POLSC, ECON, Fine Arts (Art, Music, and Theatre), or Modern Arts.
