HIST 2123 - The American West 3 Credit Hours
Course Description: A survey of the history, cultures, and myths of the American West from Indigenous societies before European contact through the twentieth century. The course examines the diverse peoples who shaped the region-including Native nations, settlers, immigrants, miners, ranchers, and railroad workers-while analyzing themes of exploration, expansion, conflict, migration, and cultural exchange. Special emphasis is placed on environmental transformation, federal policy, and the contrast between the mythic and historical West, highlighting how the region has shaped American identity and continues to influence debates over land, resources, and sovereignty.
Prerequisites: HIST 1483 or HIST 1493
